It is very difficult to describe the Bulgarian traditions and music only in a few
sentences. Then our ethnography is very variegated. Here are some interesting
details from the Bulgarian folklore, which make the country notable:
• In Bulgaria there are 5 mean folk regions - Trakiiski, Pirinski, Shopski,
Severnyashki, Dobrudjanski. Every of them have its specific music, traditions,
costumes, dialect.
• The Bulgarian music, or mostly the beat, is irregular. That means, the parts in
every time aren't equal. We have typical dances - rachenica and horo.
• The Bulgarian costumes are also very interesting. They are colorful and
magnificent. Today nobody wears this clothes in the daily round but there are a lot
of folk ensembles in every town of the country, which use traditional costumes for
their performances in Bulgaria and all over the world.
• Our traditions are varied, too. Unique for Bulgaria is the martenica. which is a
symbol of the spring. It is made of white and red woolen threads and the people tie
it to their wrists. That happens on 1st March only in Bulgaria. The people wear their
martenica until they see a stork, swallow or bloomy three. Then they tie it to the
bloormthree or put it under a stone.

• Another interesting thing by the Bulgarian traditions is the celebrating of the
namedays. Those are days, when the Orthodox Church esteems a saint. On this day
the people, who bear the name of the saint have a feast. Visitors come to their
homes without invitation. There is music, presents, of course, something for eating
and drinking - ifs very amusing!
Today we don't celebrate the all of the old traditions. A lot of folk songs are
foraotten because they have never been recorded. But the Bulgarians make ¨
everything to keep the spirit of the Bulgarian traditions, of our precursors. We
continue to sing folk songs and to dance, especially when we celebrate. We respect
our culture and we try to show the beauty of the Bulgarian ethnography to the
another nations over the world.
